BYD Qin Plus

2026-09-22 09:20:02

The BYD Qin Plus is a monumental A-segment compact sedan under BYD Auto’s Dynasty Series. As a pivotal model that spearheaded Chinese new energy vehicles (NEVs) into the mainstream and truly realised "price parity between petrol and electric"—even making "EVs cheaper than petrol cars"—the Qin Plus disrupted the long-standing stronghold of legacy foreign petrol sedans (such as the Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Lavida, and Nissan Sylphy) across China and global compact car segments through immense sales volume.

Model Overview

Positioned as an urban compact sedan, the BYD Qin Plus is offered in both DM-i (plug-in hybrid / PHEV) and EV (all-electric) powertrains. In the history of China's NEV industry, it earned badges of honour as the "disruptor of petrol sedans" and the "national family car champion". Key selling points centre on ultra-low running costs, smooth yet responsive electric-drive performance, the high-safety Blade Battery architecture, and highly competitive pricing. The model targets mass-market first-time car buyers, ehailing drivers, and global consumers with pragmatic expectations for comprehensive driving range.

Development History

The evolution of the Qin Plus exemplifies the democratisation and rapid rise of Chinese plug-in hybrid technology.

Market Breakthrough and Champion Status (2021–2023): In March 2021, the Qin Plus debuted with the first-generation DM-i super hybrid technology, making waves with an exceptional depleted-battery fuel consumption of just 3.8 L/100 km. In 2023, the lineup added the "Champion Edition", lowering the entry barrier for A-segment PHEV family sedans to RM99,800 and marking a historic milestone of "petrol-electric price parity".

Cheaper Than Petrol and Lineup Expansion (2024–2025): In early 2024, BYD launched the "Honor Edition" with an aggressive starting price of RM79,800, igniting a widespread market price war and ushering in an era where "electrified power costs less than petrol". Later that year, with the arrival of its larger sibling, the Qin L DM-i featuring 5th-generation DM technology, the Qin Plus and Qin L established the Dynasty Series' comprehensive "Dual Qin" family sedan lineup spanning from the A-segment to the B-segment.

2026 "Era 2" Long-Range Edition (2026 to present): In January 2026, BYD introduced the updated 2026 Qin Plus DM-i Long Range Edition (priced from RM89,800 to RM122,800). The biggest highlight of this update is a larger 25.28 kWh Blade Battery pack, pushing its pure electric range to a class-leading 210 km (CLTC) and extending total combined range with a full tank and full charge to 2,110 km. The update also introduces the DiLink 100 advanced intelligent cockpit and upgraded active driver assistance systems, redefining the value benchmark for national family sedans.

Market Performance

The BYD Qin Plus has been a massive sales driver in the global passenger car market, with cumulative sales of the Qin family surpassing 2.7 million units by early 2026. Domestically, it has repeatedly clinched the overall annual sales crown across all sedan segments. On the export front, the Qin Plus spearheads BYD’s international PHEV offensive, steadily expanding its presence under the BYD Qin Plus moniker or tailored export trims across the Middle East (including Saudi Arabia and the UAE), Latin America (such as Brazil and Colombia), and Southeast Asia (starting at around USD 21,000 to USD 22,000 in Saudi Arabia and the UAE). Thanks to its proven reliability and robust thermal management in extreme heat, it has become a top alternative to traditional joint-venture petrol sedans for overseas families and fleet/ridesharing operators.

Core Technology

In terms of dimensions, the Qin Plus features an A+-segment wide-body stance, measuring 4,765 mm in length (extended to 4,780 mm on selected export variants), 1,837 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height, with a 2,718 mm wheelbase and a boot capacity of around 500 litres.

Core Powertrain and EV Platform Architecture:

DM-i Plug-in Hybrid System (Standard and 2026 Long Range Edition):

Combustion Engine: Powered by the dedicated Xiaoyun 1.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-four Atkinson-cycle petrol engine (code: BYD472QA), producing 81 kW (approx. 110 PS) and 135 Nm of torque.

Electric Motor & Transmission: Paired with an E-CVT (Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission), the front drive motor delivers 132 kW or 145 kW (approx. 197 PS / rated at 177–180 hp in selected export trims), completing the 0–100 km/h sprint in as quick as 7.3 seconds.

Range and Efficiency: Standard variants feature an 8.32 kWh or 18.32 kWh Blade Battery (delivering 55 km / 120 km of pure electric range). The latest 2026 Long Range Edition ups battery capacity to 25.28 kWh for a 210 km EV range, easily covering a fortnight of urban commutes on a single charge. In depleted battery state, fuel consumption is kept between 2.79 L and 3.8 L/100 km, achieving a maximum combined cruising range of up to 2,110 km on a full tank and full charge.

EV Pure Electric System: Employs a front-mounted single electric motor pushing 100 kW or 150 kW, paired with proprietary lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Batteries to deliver a CLTC range of 420 km and 510 km.

Chassis and Suspension: Built on a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FF) architecture, featuring front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam suspension. The chassis is tuned for urban comfort, delivering pliant ride quality and effective bump absorption on paved roads.

Inside, higher-spec trims feature an 8.8-inch floating digital instrument cluster alongside BYD's signature 10.1-inch (or optional 12.8-inch / 15.6-inch) rotating central touchscreen infotainment display. Export models natively support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the safety front, the car utilises a high-strength steel safety cage, with range-topping variants equipped with the DiPilot 100 ADAS suite, incorporating Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA).

Future Plans

With BYD expanding its global supply chain and overseas manufacturing footprint, future product plans for the Qin Plus lineup centre on global tech iterations and market compliance. Over the next two to three years, BYD plans to introduce downsized versions of the 5th-generation DM hybrid powertrain and higher-integrated electric drive units to next-generation international models to comply with stricter global emission standards. Furthermore, as overseas passenger car plants in Brazil, Thailand, and other markets reach full operational capacity, the Qin Plus will expand overseas localized assembly (CKD), leveraging mass production economies of scale to fortify its competitive edge in both budget-friendly and mainstream family sedan markets worldwide.
